Identify
a national societal drug or alcohol issue.
One national and societal issue Crystal Meth. Known
professionally as crystal methamphetamine. This is a man-made drug that has just
recently been linked to ADHD and severe obesity. The affects are both immediate
and long-term. According to Patterson, (2017), “the form of a rock-like crystal
that is usually a semi-transparent white or blue color. This substance is
always illegal and has no other purpose than for abuse,” (Para 2). This drug is
usually smoked through a filthy glass pipe that addicts hold on to with their
lives. It also is injected and snorted when crushed up. It seems the fastest
way to get in the blood stream feel the direct high of this drug is to smoke it
so that is the common way it is used. It good to note this also speeds up the
addictive nature of this deadly drug. This is a global issue with more than 25
million reported users, while 12 million reside in the United States and report
being lifetime users, (Patterson, 2017). Because the high can last up to 12
hours it replaced the more expensive counter-part cocaine which came from a
plant not someone’s bathroom tub.
What
are some of the social problems you have observed due to substance use related
issues?
The social problems this student has directly observed
are as follows:
·
Stealing, murder, horrific rapes and
crimes to attain the money for the drug
·
Killing of dealers by users when money has
run out/cash is not available
·
A large drain on our medical financial
institutions, e.g., dentistry, emergency rooms, etc.
·
The funding of organized gangs such as the
MS-13. A ruthless killing group with Crystal meth as their main source of
money.
How
does this issues impact society and what problems are manifesting as a result?
According to 12 Key Rehab, (2016), “The Bureau of
Justice Statistics from the Department of Justice states that the U.S.
correction system population includes just over 6.9 million inmates and most
them — nearly 4.8 million inmates — are either on probation or on parole,” (Para10).
Because of insurance issues and health care wars in the United States many of
these people cannot get the in-patient help needed to get off this deadly drug
so they continue, ruining generations of families, lives, and communities. The
physical effects these people endure almost make them incapable of getting jobs
in society which adds to the poverty level, the unemployment level, and crime.
People will do what needs to be done to survive and when you’re on this deadly
drug that means almost anything for the drug.
